Starting daycare is one of the biggest transitions in a young child's life — and for parents, too! It's completely normal for both of you to feel a mix of excitement and nervousness. The good news is that with a little preparation and consistency, you can make this milestone a positive experience for everyone.
Start by talking about daycare in a positive, exciting way. Read picture books about starting school, point out the building when you drive by, and talk about the fun activities your child will do. Avoid apologizing or looking sad when you talk about it — children pick up on emotional cues quickly.
Practice your new routine a week before starting. Wake up at the new time, get dressed, eat breakfast, and even do a "practice drop-off" if your center allows it. Predictability is comforting for young children, and knowing what to expect reduces anxiety significantly.
On the first day, keep your goodbye short and sweet. A hug, a smile, and a confident "I'll be back after snack time!" works better than lingering. Even if your child cries, trust that our experienced teachers know exactly how to comfort and redirect them — most children settle within 10-15 minutes.
Remember that adjustment takes time. Some children adapt in a few days, while others may take a few weeks. Consistency, patience, and open communication with your child's teachers will make all the difference. We're here to support your family every step of the way!
