Did you know that food preferences established in early childhood often last a lifetime? The eating habits formed between ages 1 and 5 shape how children relate to food for years to come. That's why we take nutrition seriously at Bright Start — and why mealtime is about more than just filling bellies.
Our weekly menus are designed by a registered dietitian and approved by the USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program. We serve breakfast, lunch, and two snacks daily, all included in tuition. Meals feature a rainbow of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and low-fat dairy.
But what children eat is only half the story. How they eat matters just as much. At Bright Start, mealtime is a social experience. Children sit together at small tables, practice using utensils, learn table manners, and are encouraged — never forced — to try new foods. We follow the "division of responsibility" approach: adults decide what and when to serve; children decide whether and how much to eat.
Want to encourage healthy eating at home? Involve your child in meal preparation — even toddlers can wash vegetables or stir batter. Offer new foods alongside familiar favorites, and don't give up if they reject something the first time. Research shows it can take 10-15 exposures before a child accepts a new food!
Most importantly, model the behavior you want to see. Children who watch adults enjoy a variety of healthy foods are much more likely to do the same. Make mealtimes pleasant and pressure-free, and you'll be setting the foundation for a lifetime of healthy eating.
