Kindergarten Readiness: A Parent's Checklist

The transition to kindergarten is an exciting and sometimes nerve-wracking milestone for families. As a parent, you may wonder: "Is my child ready?" The truth is, kindergarten readiness is about much more than knowing letters and numbers. It encompasses social, emotional, physical, and cognitive skills.

Social and Emotional Readiness: Can your child separate from you without excessive distress? Do they interact with peers, share, and take turns? Can they express their needs and feelings in words? These skills are often more important than academic knowledge in the early weeks of kindergarten.

Self-Help Skills: Can your child use the bathroom independently? Put on and take off their coat and shoes? Open their lunch containers? Manage their belongings? These independence skills build confidence and reduce stress in the classroom environment.

Language and Communication: Does your child speak in complete sentences? Can they follow two- or three-step directions? Do they ask and answer questions? Can they retell a simple story? Strong language skills are the foundation for reading and writing.

Early Academic Skills: Can your child recognize some letters, especially those in their name? Count to at least 10? Recognize basic shapes and colors? Hold a pencil or crayon correctly? These are helpful but not mandatory — kindergarten teachers expect children to arrive with a range of abilities.
